Explore This Unique Comic Strip Exhibit at the Institute of Texan Cultures

Experience the inspirational and unique exhibit on the Chisholm Kid happening at the Institute of Texan Cultures! This fascinating showcase of the history and cultural impact of the Chisholm Kid, the first black cowboy to be featured in a comic strip, is a special display that all ages will enjoy.

Known as the “Lone Fighter for Justice for All,” the namesake hero of The Chisholm Kid was portrayed as a positive black character equal to contemporaries like Hopalong Cassidy, Dick Tracy, Buck Rogers, and Flash Gordon. The Chisholm Kid appeared from 1950 to 1954 in the Pittsburgh Courier, a storied black newspaper, and paid homage to the thousands of black cowboys who drove cattle along the Chisholm Trail from Texas to Kansas following the Civil War. Throughout its run, the strip also touched on the time’s civil rights movement and the ongoing struggles for equality in the 1950s, making it a pivotal icon in the world of comic strips. Come see this immersive exhibition that features panels from the original comic and guides visitors through the incredible story of this strip’s history. It’s an educational look into an overlooked past, so come learn something new at the Institute of Texan Cultures!
